A new survey from VisitEngland has revealed that 13.5m Brits – 27% of the adult population – are planning to take an overnight holiday trip in the UK over this Christmas and New Year.
This presents a huge opportunity for hoteliers to still push festive offers and capture last-minute Christmas trade, cashing in on some of the £2.5bn tourism spend that is expected to be generated as a result.
This is according to the results of VisitEngland’s Christmas Trip Tracker Survey, which interviewed 1,219 adults to compile the fugures.
Compared to 2014 when 21% of Brits were planning an overnight trip over Christmas and new year, this year will see 27% of British adults take a trip over the holidays. 58% (of those definitely planning a trip in England) plan to take one trip, but just over a third (38%) are planning to take two or more.
VisitEngland chief executive James Berresford said: “It is great to see that so many people are planning an overnight trip to another part of the country over the festive period. Wherever you stay in England there is always something exciting to see or do right on the doorstep, and this is never truer than at Christmas!”
