£40m hotel plan for Bournemouth given the go ahead but slated as ‘bland’ by councillors

Belverdere Hotel

A proposed plan for a £40m hotel in Bournemouth has been given the green light, but its design branded as ‘bland’ and ‘boxy’ by councillors.

Permission has been granted to build a new four-star hotel and apartment block at the site of the former Belvedere Hotel on the corner of St Peter’s Road and Bath Road.

The proposal will see a new 131-bedroom hotel, complete with a sky bar, created at the derelict site, but has received mixed views from councillors on the scheme’s design.

Councillors called it ‘bland’ and ‘boxy’, while others said the ‘landmark’ scheme was not exciting.

However Michael Bibring, co-founder of Fresh Lime Developments, said he was “absolutely delighted” the scheme had been given the green light.

“We think it’s an absolutely first-class design and everyone who has seen it has agreed with that.
