Dan and his wife Rohaise bought The Torridon from Rohaise’s parents in 2004. Armed with big ideas and ambitions for growth, the couple began a series of new ventures and introduced a number of new service cultures to both the hotel and the workforce.
Dan forged strong relationships with destination partners, immersed himself in marketing the surrounding area, and continued to oversee the running of the hotel, while Rohaise took control of staff training and started to encourage them to get involved in shaping the hotel for the future.
The work paid off and now The Torridon is the only hotel to win AA Scottish Hotel of the Year twice.
Since their takeover, the couple have expanded the business to establish Torridon Activities, the hotel’s own-brand activities venture, a destination pub with rooms, plus a self-catering cottage The Boathouse. Wise investment into the hotel, team and marketing has seen turnover, gross profits and occupancy rise.
Responding swiftly to the changing needs of the guests as well as seasonal fluctuation have all contributed to increasing occupancy from 59% to 75% in the last five years, and REVPAR from £125.88 in 2016 to £153.10 YTD.
And while Dan takes care of the finer financial details, Rohaise provides development plans for each team member for their internal development, working closely with Springboard and ensuring that the 22% of the annual budget committed to staff training plans is used wisely. Not only this, but Dan has gained recognition as a Master Innholder, is vice-chair of Pride of Britain Hotels and is a mentor for the owner of Georgian House Hotel in London.
