A new 83-capsule hotel called The Pod has opened on Beach Road, Singapore.

The independently-operated property is located in the top three storeys of a five-level building close to the business districts.

The capsule concept is inspired by modern, minimalistic living without compromising comfort, quality and style. Other capsule hotels in Singapore include Wink Hostel in Chinatown.

“We have been observing the hospitality industry for some time now and realised there exists a gap in Singapore for discerning travellers who were mindful of their budget when it came to choosing their accommodation, but wanted to enjoy the comforts and quality synonymous with a hotel,” The Pod Singapore cofounder Seetoh Kum Loon said in a statement.

“Currently, in Singapore, travellers can choose to either stay at a hotel and pay a little more or opt for the budget backpacker hostels, potentially compromising on comfort, service and amenities. Here at The Pod, we want to give travellers the best of both worlds by offering them the premium amenities, services, look and feel of a boutique hotel, along with the communal and affordable nature of a hostel. The Pod was conceptualised to serve this gap in the market,” he added.

Three types of Pod are available: The Single Pod 1, catering to one guest, includes front entry, two pillows, a personal locker under the Pod with key-card access. The Single Pod 2 is very similar but with side entry. The Queen pod fits two guests, has four pillows, front entry and includes two personal lockers under the Pod with key-card access. Female-only Pods are also available.

Pods also include a personal reading light, fold-down table for laptop use or writing, international power socket, hangers, a clothes rack, quality cotton sheets and pull down blinds.

A communal marble vanity against a mirrored wall and self-contained bathrooms comprising a shower separated from the water closet and sink by a glass screen enable privacy in the shared washrooms.

The Pod offers a hot buffet breakfast, high-speed wifi access, amenities, Nespresso coffee and a complimentary personalised concierge and laundry service.

Business travellers can access the free business suites, which come with laptops, telephones and offer free local calls, wifi, printing and scanning services.

Rates for a single Pod start at $78 and at $98 for Queen Pods.
