Five-star Mayfair hotel Claridge’s has been given the green light to construct what is said will be ‘Britain’s biggest mega basement’, containing a new spa, wine cellar and in-house chocolatier.
The plans were given the go ahead after officials ruled it would enhance London’s reputation as a luxury destination, with the epic new addition sitting five storeys below the renowned venue.
Now approved, Claridge’s will work on creating just under 20,000 sq ft of new floorspace to become home to a swimming pool, spa, sauna, wine cellar, bakery and in-house chocolatier.
Owners of the hotel, The Maybourne Group said that the new facilities are now dubbed ‘must haves’ for any five-star hotel worth their salt.
The group said that extra space would be used for laundry and storage, helping to reduce the number of delivery vans visiting the property each day and minimising the noise and disturbance in the area.
The basement plans will kickstart a line of new developments proposed at the iconic hotel, which will see 40 bedrooms over on two new floors at the 203-room hotel.
A spokesman for Claridge’s said: “Claridge’s is excited about our future development plans to put in to place state of the art, sustainable technology and systems which will further enhance services for our guests, staff and neighbours, taking this iconic Mayfair hotel’s vision into the next century.”
