Clerk & Well, London
Opened in: September 2014
Owned by: First Restaurant Group
The story: First Restaurant Group consists of three pubs and made its debut into the hotel market with the expansion of The Clerk & Well pub in London. The popular city watering hole added six boutique bedrooms to its offering and saw a strong 87% occupancy in the first four weeks of opening. The rooms have all been designed by Meredith Winston – the creative behind the look of small-time pop star Harry Styles’ current adobe – marking her first hotel project for the Group. Inspired by the traditional pub with rooms’ concept, and one that has carved a niche in the sector in its own right, Winston has chosen to continue the theme throughout the property.
Why we like it: With a separate hotel entrance to the side of the pub and no reception or concierge service, guests are given two keys, one for the front door and one for their bedroom. This type of ‘no-service’ offering has become extremely popular this year, especially with business people looking for that real home-from-home experience. The bedrooms features quirky style elements such as images of dogs dressed in military uniforms, wallpaper designs of bookshelves and a cosy colour palette, giving the feel of a winter lodge.
Meredith said of the design: “The whole building needed to be completely redone; we started with the real bare bones. I wanted the theme to be in keeping with the pub downstairs and for it to maintain a real homely look. All the furniture was sourced from a combination of big suppliers and eBay; I found some real treasures on there!”
