Bovey Castle, the former home of the founder of WH Smith, has been sold to Sir Peter Rigby’s Eden Collection.
The 64-bed hotel had been on the market for two years with an asking price of £17.5m having been put up for sale by the Delancey Group headed by Jamie Ritblat.
Local press reports suggested the final selling price was less than half of the £26m figure Delancey paid the previous owner.
The turn of the century property, located within the Dartmoor National Park near Chagford, Devon, has a golf course, a spa and 24 lodges and an activity centre located in the grounds.
Eden Collection MD Mark Chambers said:
“Restoring this iconic hotel and its estate is an exciting project for our team and we are very much looking forward to cementing its place as the jewel in the crown of the leisure industry in the South West.”
He told Boutique Hotelier there were no immediate plans to change the senior management structure at the hotel adding:
“The team – including Andrew who is an excellent chef – at Bovey Castle have done a great job, especially the resort staff who are the unsung heroes."
