EXCLUSIVE: Boutique brand Malmaison looks to Far East for expansion

Boutique brand Malmaison is looking to expand in the Far East, with overseas acquisitions firmly on the agenda, according to COO Scott Harper.

In an exclusive chat with Boutique Hotelier, Harper told us that the brand, which now consists of 16 properties across the UK, is currently looking out in the Far East for new sites, but stresses that any new venture would have to be ‘commercially viable’.

“We haven’t got any sites yet but we are talking about it and when it happens it would be a new build,” Harper adds.

Having acquired four new sites in December 2015 with Hotel du Vin under its new ownership Frasers Hospitality, growth for the group is ramping up as Harper explains that overseas expansion is certainly possible with international markets on Malmaison’s radar.

“I think we would expand overseas, it’s just about finding the right sites. It’s driven more by Frasers and their thoughts on where they want to go next.

“They support us – they would like to expand, but also very practical about doing it the right way and it has to be the right building and location,” Harper says.

Malmaison Brighton was the latest addition to the boutique portfolio, which launched officially at the start of June this year, following a transformation to tie in with brand’s style and standards.

Malmaison Exeter is currently undergoing an extensive refurbishment and will be the next to open its doors.
