The fourth boutique hotel from pioneering young brand Artist Residence has now opened in Oxford. The traditional thatched pub with rooms promises an ‘offbeat English bohemian feel, with great food and drink’, opening as pub and restaurant Mr Hanbury’s Mason Arms. Closed since 2014, award-winning duo Charlie and Justin Salisbury who head up the Artist Residence group, took over the former pub in 2016 and got to work refurbishing the property with their signature style. In the kitchen, the F&B offering will be headed up by Leon Smith, who boasts experience under Michelin star chef Tom Aikens and at at 21, he became senior sous chef of The Pony and Trap, with Michelin starred Josh Eggleston. He then went to The Royal Oak at Paley Street, another Michelin starred gastro pub in Maidenhead. The five bedrooms to open in the original thatched roof building will mark the first phase of development, with a further 7 bedrooms due to open towards the end of the year in the outbuilding and stables. Artist Residence Oxford will join hotels in Cornwall, Brighton and Pimlico in London in the portfolio when it opens its doors.
