Forest Side becomes new Cumbrian gastronomic hot spot

The newest hotel opened by Wildsmith Hotels in Cumbria has scooped two top awards, cementing its status as one of the best hotel restaurants in the region just one month after opening.

The 20-bedroom Forest Side in Grasmere, which is the third property in the Wildsmith portfolio, was awarded two titles at this year’s Cumbria Life’s Food & Drink Awards.

The food impressed the panel of judges, which was led by acclaimed chef Steven Doherty, who then awarded the boutique, Hotel Restaurant of the Year and Best Newcomer.

The awards ceremony, held at Kendal College, saw a number of top businesses across the region celebrated in a total of 16 award categories, including Producer of the Year, Rising Star Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Forest Side opened its doors earlier this year after an extensive 18-month, £4m refurbishment. The kitchen team is led by head chef Kevin Tickle who comes from an extensive cooking background including an eight-year stint at L’Enclume.

Andrew Wildsmith, owner of Forest Side, said: “Kevin Tickle is a chef that inspires. It is abundantly clear that his brigade, including sous chef Martin Frickel, have really hit the ground running. To win two prestigious Cumbria Life Food & Drink Awards within weeks of opening is testament to the quality of the food produced by Kevin’s team and the quality of the dining experience at Forest Side. The entire team at Wildsmith Hotels are immensely proud of what they have achieved in such a short space of time.”
