Hotel group bids for 50-bed extension at Welsh boutique to more than double occupancy

The Tremorfa Group has submitted an application to add 50 bedrooms to its property in Newport, which would see the hotel more than double its occupancy.

The group, which purchased St Mellons Country Club and Hotel in September 2014 off a guide price of £1.2m, wants to add 50 bedrooms, plus a new conference facility to the hotel, that is currently home to 39 bedrooms.

The application was submitted to Newport City Council earlier this year and a decision is expected to be made at a committee meeting this week.

The hotel is situated within the St Mellons Golf Course, dates back to the 19th century, and was originally a private residence.

The 39 bedrooms are currently spread across the main house and external chalets and the hotel is also home to a lounge, restaurant, bar, ballroom, spa and leisure centre.

As part of the new proposals, part of the existing building will be demolished and an extension will be built to provide upgraded facilities for conferences and weddings.

Alongside the 50 new bedrooms, a block of 20 chalets on the site would also be removed to make way for 18 log cabins.
