Iconic Welsh building to be brought back to life

An iconic building on the seafront in Aberystwyth is set to be brought back to life after developers submitted a plan for a luxury boutique hotel.

The proposal will see the 150-year-old former court and council offices Swyddfa’r Sir on Marine Terrace transformed into a 31-bedroom hotel and spa, as well as 20 luxury flats and 19 studio apartments.

The development plan, submitted earlier this month to councillors by Hawkestone Limited, is expected to cost upwards of £5m.

According to developers, discussions with hotel operators are already underway, with a number of parties interested in running the high-end hotel with a basement swimming pool and spa.

The new homes would be rented rather than sold.

The building was bought last year at auction for £530,000 by Birmingham-based development company Hawkestone Limited, run by director Muhammad Ali Aziz.
