Muckrach Country House Hotel opened as a boutique hotel in the Highlands of Scotland in April 2015. Owners the Cowap family spent 14 months restoring the property, stripping the hotel back to its granite and starting again. The building started life as a Victorian shooting lodge in 1861 so has to be completely rewired throughout and re-plumbing also had to be undertaken. Now the property consists of 13 bedrooms (2 rooms are dog friendly) with Hypnos beds, chandeliers, contemporary bathrooms, fabric wallpapers and special wall art. The public rooms are home to the Chesterfields and the Drawing Room, where afternoon tea is served. The coffee shop and restaurant offers food from breakfast through to dinner, with the menus created by head chef Rayner Muller, a South African 27 year old with the drive to make a name for him and the hotel. The space is a coffee shop during the day and a brasserie-style restaurant by night. The hotel works closely with local suppliers and cakes, quiches and muffins are baked daily. The Cowap family is based in Cheshire from where they manage their multi award winning businesses of farm shops, coffee shops, butcheries, deli, gift barn and forest lodges. The success of their self-catering accommodation combined with their passion for the Cairngorm National Park drew them to the purchase of a hotel 400 miles away.
