London pub adds boutique bedrooms

A popular London pub has added six boutique bedrooms to its offering, becoming the first hotel in the First Restaurant Group portfolio.

The Clerk & Well in Farringdon, London is one of three pubs that make up First Restaurant Group, and now boasts two doubles and four large double bedrooms.

With a separate hotel entrance to the side of the pub and no reception or concierge service, guests are given two keys, one for the front door and one for their bedroom.

Located on the Clerkenwell Road in the heart of the capital, the hotel has only been open a month, but occupancy has already reached a solid 87% in those four weeks.

The rooms have all been designed by Meredith Winston, creative director at First Restaurant Group, and the project marks her debut into the boutique hotel market.

Inspired by the traditional pub with rooms’ concept, The Clerk & Well features quirky style elements such as images of dogs dressed in military uniforms and wallpaper designs of bookshelves, which help to create a real home-from-home feel.

Meredith said of the design: “It was a long process to get it to where it is today, as the whole building needed to be completely redone; we started with the real bare bones. I wanted the theme to be in keeping with the pub downstairs and for it to maintain a real homely look. All the furniture was sourced from a combination of big suppliers and eBay; I found some real treasures on there!

“The feedback we’ve received so far has been brilliant and I’m hoping to create more hotels within the group with the same feel.”

Despite only being open a short while, the hotel has been a popular choice for business clients visiting London from the provinces, mainly due to its location and affordable price range. Doubles start from £165 and there is the option to add a breakfast basket for £10.
