Both aged 28, Andy and Louise Macbeth stumbled upon Beck Hall in spring 2014 and fell in love with it. Shortly after, with their Battersea rescue dog Wookie in tow, they uprooted from their London home, leaving behind careers in IT and journalism, and set to work transforming the streamside property from a run-down 18-key B&B into their dream dog-friendly hotel.
They embarked on a £200k restoration, encompassing 16 bathrooms, 18 bedrooms, communal areas, and the creation of a 19th hotel bedroom.
In July 2015, the Macbeths launched The Secret Garden, a 32-cover (plus 34 al fresco streamside covers) restaurant at Beck Hall. The hotel improvements and the expansion of the F&B offering led to a 20% average annual occupancy increase between July 2014 and March 2017 (occupancy stands at 82% year to date), and a 102% revenue increase from £235,603 year ending July 2015, to £476,411 year ending July 2016. In the 10 months to March 2017, revenue is already at £532,962, putting the hotel on track for another record year. Since the acquisition, the couple has grown and nurtured the hotel’s team from just seven employees to a diverse 19-strong team today, and in February 2017, Beck Hall took on a four-bedroom rental property in Malham to house some of its growing team. Planning permission has just been granted for two single-story extensions to form a new reception area, bar, and additional streamside dining space.
Two additional deluxe streamside guestrooms will also be created with work set to start in November and completion due early 2018. At home, the Macbeth twins Bonnie and Milo arrived in May 2017, with another set of twins due to arrive in May 2017! Four babies aside, 2017 looks set to be Beck Ham’s most exciting year yet.
