Starwood Hotels has revealed plans to release an app available exclusively on the new Apple watch that will allow guests to open their hotel room.
Apple watches are due to go on sale in 2015 in the US, and hotel group Starwood is working on the creation of an app made for the platform that will mean guests will no longer have to dig around in their bag to find their bedroom key.
Costing around $349, the Apple watch will act as a digital room key and will mean that guests who have a compatible iPhone will simply have to tap a button while standing at the door.
The new creation was unveiled at an Apple conference last week, and will see it rolled out at various Starwood properties worldwide, including the group’s W and Aloft brands, from next spring.
The news comes after Hilton hotels recently announced plans to replace traditional room keys with smartphones.
Starwood also made the headlines earlier this month when a robot butler become the first mechanical member of staff on the pay roll at the brand’s Aloft hotel in California Silicon Valley.
