Plans for a new 60-bedroom hotel to be built in Cambourne, Cambridge are being discussed as part of an application outlined by Newcrest Estates.
The proposal includes the build of a hotel as well as a new family pub and restaurant, but would see the new establishment go into direct competition with The Belfry, which sits across the river from where the new hotel would be built.
Newcrest Estates is hoping to put a ‘cheaper and more affordable version’ of The Belfry on the site.
Chartered surveyor Duncan Mason spoke recently at a Cambourne Parish Council planning meeting. He said: “It’s very early days, but this will progress a lot over the next week or two. Things are changing every day, but this is just a masking exercise to the scale that we’re talking about.”
“It’s all going to be quite prominent and on a quite prominent site. But fundamentally a decision needs to be taken about which way to go and, to a large extent, pub and restaurant operators in the family pub market are quite restrictive when it comes to new buildings,” Mr Mason added.
The area near The Belfry is one of three sites the company is looking to build on in Cambourne.
