North West hotel group gets top marks for sustainability

The Waterhead Boutique Hotel and Dining in Ambleside and the art deco Midland Hotel in Morecambe are the latest properties to strike gold in their respective Green Business Tourism inspections.

It means that all five establishments run by English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues have now attained the top standard for sustainability, reports In Cumbria.

Waterhead Boutique GM Mark Needham said: “Our aim is to continue working constructively with our local communities and the business supply chain by making sound social and ethical choices. All this means maximising resources, minimising waste and promoting all the positive aspects of our culture and ecology.”

The Green Business Tourism gold standard is awarded where a strong ethos for sustainability is being achieved, backed up by examples such as the latest energy-efficient measures and renewable technologies, green procurement and ethical produce.

Benchmarks include measuring the control of resource use and demonstrating effective monitoring with targets for savings and sustainable changes in working practices, as well as working with local suppliers to provide fresh, local and even organic items.

In 2011 English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues became the first group based in Cumbria to obtain the Green Tourism Business Award.
