Andrew Stembridge, managing director, Chewton Glen and Cliveden
Andrew Stembridge looks after two of the most impressive hotels in the UK; Chewton Glen and Cliveden. So much so, that their reputation for luxury hospitality has spread across the world and seen them rub shoulders with the global leaders in the boutique hotel industry.
Andrew’s first taste in a managerial role at Chewton Glen was as operations manager between 1997 and 2001, before he took on his first general manager position of The Scotsman Hotel in Edinburgh where he stayed for two years. The hugely attractive proposition of managing director at Chewton Glen lured Andrew back in October 2003 and he has been going from strength to strength ever since.
Chewton Glen barely needs any introduction; a five red-star country house hotel, which has been a member of Relais and Chateaux since 1971, comprises 70 bedrooms – including 12 treehouses – and has scooped a whopping 53 awards across a number of sectors since it opened its doors in 1966. Andrew has proven himself to be an integral part of this success as managing director and really set the benchmark for country house hotels.
A Master Innholder – formerly chairman for two years from 2012-2014 – with a BA Hons degree in Hotel Management and Tourism, Andrew has participated in the General Manager’s Programme at Cornell University in the USA and gained a wealth of experience at properties both in the UK and overseas, including a stint with Malmaison in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Andrew has also been an international executive board director of Relais & Châteaux since 2009.
Some of his key achievements at Chewton Glen include overseeing the £1m overhaul of the hotel’s restaurant in 2011 and spearheading the build and launch of 12 eco-friendly treehouses in 2012, alongside developing a work force that is deemed ‘world class’.
In 2012, Andrew’s role expanded to encompass the management of Cliveden House in Berkshire, where he drove an ambitious project to completely refurbish the Grade-I National Trust property with a vision to restore its place as the best hotel outside London.
Here his qualities as a great hotelier – attention to detail, sense of humour, commitment and passion – seeped into business at Cliveden and it is now widely regarded as another star performer in the luxury market.
