The first restaurant inside Birmingham’s historic Grand Hotel will open its doors next week, joined by a cocktail bar all owned by hospitality chain Living Ventures.
Gusto, a restaurant inspired by the traditional grand cafes of Europe, is housed inside the Colmore Row building and will launch next Friday, alongside cocktail bar The Alchemist.
The two ventures will be the first of their kind to open inside the historic Grade-II listed Victorian building, which is currently in the process of being brought back to its former glory as a new hotel.
The hotel closed in 2002, but planning permission for a new 152-bedroom hotel was granted in 2012 and work began that year with a view to be complete in 2018.
Now with Gusto, a 130-cover restaurant plus outdoor terrace at the hotel, gearing up to open its doors and The Alchemist preparing to launch, the new ventures are expected to cause quite a stir in the city.
Speaking to Birmingham Mail, managing director Sue Grimes says: “We have been wanting to open in Birmingham for a long time and Colmore Row is the perfect location. In designing our new Birmingham branch we’ve been able to make the most of The Grand to create what we think is really wonderful looking restaurant.”
The 4000 sq. ft Gusto restaurant makes the most of its Victorian heritage, with exposed brickwork and the chain’s signature olive tree adorned with fairy lights.
The Alchemist will be a themed bar and will be all about the cocktail making.
