The ‘handy’ choice
Hong-Kong based tech start-up company Tink Labs has developed ‘handy’ to overcome frustrations with roaming charges for international guests when visiting a hotel in another country. ‘handy’ is a free smartphone that guests can use at their disposal during their stay at the hotel, connecting with what’s on in the local area, making calls abroad free of charge and buying extras from the hotel such as spa treatments and room service. Created by young entrepreneur Terence Kwok, the company has now set itself the ambitious target of rolling out the device to 1 million hotel rooms worldwide, and 125,000 rooms in the UK alone. For hoteliers, the ‘handy’ device results in an average spend increase is around $20 per room per night.

Keep on the go
The Chargit technology uses a ‘through surface transmitter’ to create a charging zone, which can simultaneously charge multiple devices – smartphones, tablets, laptops – simply by placing them within it. It helps set hotels apart, offering venue differentiation, improving the in-room customer experience, as it removes the need for international plug adaptors or for guests to bring a charger.
It also improves profitability in communal areas such as hotel bars and restaurants thanks to increased dwelling time during the charging period. CHARGit’s App lists charging destinations, improving venue visibility and increasing footfall, while the charging facilities also enhances corporate image.
