Starwood has announced the rollout of SPG Keyless, the industry’s first mobile, keyless entry system to its loyalty members around the world.
The Starwood Preferred Guest programme has introduced the system which allows guests to use their smartphone as a room key.
Rolling out to Aloft, Element and W Hotels worldwide, SPG Keyless has made its debut in 10 hotels in markets including Beijing, Hong Kong, New York, Los Angeles and Doha.
The system works through a smartphone app, which guests must sign up to and allows for check in 24 hours before arrival. Guests then receive a notification to show that they have checked in and the SPG app will update their room number and Bluetooth key when the bedroom is ready.
When guests arrive, they are able to bypass the front desk and go directly to their room, hold their smartphone to the door lock and wait for the green light to then enter the room.
“Not only does SPG Keyless alleviate a perennial pain point for travelers, but it also transforms the first interaction with our guests from one that is transactional to something more personal,” said Frits van Paasschen, Starwood’s president and chief executive officer. “This is just the beginning, because through mobile we have the opportunity to marry high tech and high touch to transform the hotel experience in many exciting ways.”
