Recruitment specialist Jobco-op has warned the hospitality industry to think now about potential staffing problems that could arise during the festive season, in a bid to make the season as profitable as possible for businesses.
Jobco-op provides temporary restaurant and bar staff to a number of companies, including Greene King, and has encouraged owners to prepare in advance for Christmas.
Shaun Price, director said: “Every year, all kinds of hospitality businesses leave it too late to think about Christmas and end up with low quality staff or sometimes simply not enough.
“It may seem like summer is just drawing to a close but this is the right time to be starting planning your staff needs and working out how you are going to meet them.”
Price added that the problem of Christmas staff shortages tended to be compounded in many businesses by a tendency for a number of established staff to move on during October and November.
“These are fairly busy months for recruitment and, especially in a sector like hospitality with a high level of inbuilt staff turnover, it could be that you lose a number of people.
“This means that you could potentially be facing a shortfall in manpower even before you begin planning for Christmas, creating a kind of double whammy effect.”
Price added that many hospitality businesses used ad-hoc recruitment methods to satisfy their needs over Christmas and New Year but that the results were usually, at best, mixed.
“The advantages of turning to a specialist recruiter is that they will have carried out a thorough vetting process for you. With sufficient notice, they will almost always be able to meet your needs.”
