Tiina Carr’s background in design set her up nicely to spearhead the creation of a new boutique hotel for the city of Sheffield. She opened Brocco on the Park in 2015, transforming the derelict Peace Guest House into a beautiful Scandi-chic inspired eight-bedroom boutique within a year of purchasing the building.
With no prior experience of hospitality, Carr dived right in, controlling the design and build, liaising with contractors and deciding on every little detail over the 16-month renovation phase. A £900k investment later and Brocco on the Park was born, and a new concept brought to the people of Sheffield.
The bedrooms work alongside Brocco Kitchen, a 52-cover restaurant headed up by Leslie Buddington, who Carr recruited from stints at Soho House Hotel and the Curator’s House. Within six months of opening, the property had caught the eye of tourists, locals and the media, welcoming over 1,000 guests and 25,000 diners, while Carr had home grown her hospitality team to 26 employees.
In October 2016, Brocco on the Park scooped the coveted title of City Hotel of the Year at the Good Hotel Guide’s 2017 Cesar Awards. The newcomer blew the judges away, having created a name for itself in Sheffield and the wider vicinity, turning the property into one of the coolest hotels in the city. “The feedback from local Sheffield people has been overwhelming to be honest,” Carr says, “so many people want to know where the tiles, windows, furniture, fencing etc is from or the colour of my walls that I have set up a page on the website dedicated to ‘design notes’.”
