The transformation of a former shopping centre in Newcastle into the debut UK boutique from the Dalata Hotel Group, is now well underway.
The 1960’s built Newgate Shopping Centre was bulldozed last year to be replaced by a four-star hotel, student accommodation and a shopping scheme in a £100m project.
The Dalata Hotel Group – Ireland’s largest hotel operator – will open a luxury Maldron hotel at the site, its first in the UK.
Dalata has signed a 35-year lease with McAleer & Rushe, the Northern Ireland-based developer leading the project, for what will be their eighth under the upmarket brand.
Bosses working on the project hope to have the hotel up and running by the end of 2018.
McAleer and Rushe bought the centre for £18.2m in 2006 and in October 2015 and got permission to forge ahead with its new plans.
