Construction of the delayed Hotel Indigo York will begin in mid-January, Boutique Hotelier has learned.
“Works are due to begin. They’re doing some preparatory works in December and the main construction works will start the second week in January,” a Soujourn Hotels LLP spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said the property, on the site of the former Infinity motorcycle showroom in Walmgate, would open in late Spring 2015.
Sojourn Hotels secured approval for a three-storey hotel on the site in 2011, however, the area is currently being used as a car park and planning consultant Design Coalition recently asked the City of York Council to clarify “outstanding issues regarding the building design”, according to a report in The York Press.
Plans for the 101-key boutique hotel, which will be part of the InterContinental Hotel Group portfolio, include a restaurant, bar and “spa-style” rooms.
It is thought that the hotel will create 40 jobs when it opens, with the recruitment process due to begin in Spring 2014, according to the Sojourn Hotels spokesperson.
