Young One is North West Young Chef of the Year

An apprentice chef at the Northcote has carried off the top prize at the North West Young Chef of the Year.

Accrington-born Danny Young, 20, beat five other candidates to first place in the competition sponsored by Essential Cuisine and will now pass to the next heat which will take place next year.

His menu – inspired by locally-sourced food – included Formby Asparagus, wheat-fed Goosnargh Guinea fowl and Hesketh Bank Strawberries.

He was praised for his “well researched and sublimely constructed menu” by the judging panel which included Chef Brian Mellor from Harthill Cookery School, Nigel Crane, managing director of Essential Cuisine, Steven Doherty, chef consultant, Chris Holland, Head Chef at Alderley Edge Hotel and contestant on Great British Menu and Graham Tinsley MBE, Head Chef at Carden Park Hotel.
