Young Trailblazers: Gareth Banner, managing director, The Ned

Gareth

Gareth Banner is a stalwart of hotelkeeping in London. He comes from a long line of roles at some of the capital’s top properties and is now about to embark on one of his most exciting appointments yet, as managing director of new Soho House venture, The Ned.

The Cavendish was where he first gained experience as a manager, joining in 2006 and leaving after two years to take a step up to the general manager position at one of London’s original boutique hotels, The Hempel. During this time, the ambitious man gained himself a Master Innholder scholarship to study at Cornell University with the aim of honing his skills and developing further.

In August 2013, he was appointed general manager of the five-star 245-bedroom St Pancras Renaissance hotel, which had opened two years prior following a £200m renovation. His experience at St Pancras Renaissance lined him up nicely to take the head honcho position at the new Soho House venture in May 2016, dubbed London’s most ambitious hotel project.

With the entire world posed ready for the launch of the £200m property, compete with nine restaurants and bars, The Ned is gearing up to open its doors in April, following a transformation of the former Midland bank building to a 252-bedroom hotel and private members’ club. The Ned is a joint partnership between Soho House and US hotel owner and developer Sydell group, which owns the NoMad in New York, the Line in LA and the Freehand in Miami.

Upon his appointment, Banner said that it was a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity, and will take charge of 800 staff, including three executive chefs who will together oversee a brigade of 152.
