The City Gate is a new boutique pub with rooms to open in Exeter, after being transformed by hospitality group, Young’s.

The 14-bedroom property, which dates back to 1778, has now been given a complete facelift, with its pub dining room, garden and bar reworked into a stylish boutique haven.

A new modern British menu is served in the elegant dining room, bar-side lounge and conservatory, with views of the garden which backs onto ancient Roman city wall

The City Gate is now also home to The Cellar Bar, which was previously the pub’s wine store. Now a ‘secret hideaway’, the space boasts dark wood and exposed brick walls finished with unusual artwork.

The hotel’s boutique bedrooms are designed in shades of soft grey and teal with highlights of mustard yellow.

The bedrooms pay reference to Exeter’s historical 19th century trading port and the prominent part it played within the UK textile industry with design touches such as nautical-inspired rope lamps and vintage Sawyer sewing machines.

Amenities include Nespresso coffee machines, toiletries from Algotherm, hairdryers and laptop safes.

Extra touches come in the form of a complimentary glass of vintage port, hand-made Devon fudge and fresh milk in the fridge.
