Andrew Brownsword Hotels announces new executive head chef at Gidleigh Park

Andrew Brownsword Hotels has appointed Chris Eden as executive head chef at Gidleigh Park.

Eden will start his new role at the five-star, 26-bedroom hotel on September 1, leaving his current position as head chef at Driftwood in Cornwall where he has been for 12 years.

Eden was awarded a Michelin star in 2012, becoming the first Cornish born chef to hold a star in their home county.

Retaining the star ever since, Eden was additionally awarded a fourth AA rosette in 2018, becoming just one of four chefs in Cornwall to hold this accolade.

Chris Eden comments: “Having grown up in the south west, to take up this role at Gidleigh Park is the stuff of childhood dreams.  Gidleigh Park’s great team, beautiful setting and iconic reputation combine to make this such an exciting opportunity and I can’t wait to get started.”

Born and bred in Cornwall, and having spent most of his career in the south west, Eden has also spent time in London, cooking under Paul Gayler at The Lanesborough, under Chris Galvin at The Orrery and for Phil Howard at The Square, before he returned to Cornwall in 2007 to take up his position at Driftwood. 

Eden replaces Chris Simpson who departed Gidleigh Park in January 2019.

Previously Gidleigh Park had held two Michelin stars since 1998, first secured by Michael Caines and then retained by Michael Wignall who was Simpson’s predecessor.

Wignall left the hotel in January 2018.

Gidleigh Park is part of the Andrew Brownsword Hotels portfolio, which is owned by Christina and Andrew Brownsword. The collection includes: Gidleigh Park, The Bath Priory, Amberley Castle in West Sussex, four Cotswold properties: The Slaughters Manor House, The Slaughters Country Inn, Buckland Manor plus the Old Swan and Minster Mill in Oxfordshire, and Sydney House Chelsea.

The group also runs ABode Hotels situated in Canterbury, Chester, Exeter, Glasgow and Manchester.
