Newcastle-based developer, High Street Hospitality, has put plans in motion for the creation of two new hotels in County Durham.
The group has submitted planning application for the renovation of an old building in the city centre, as well as developing a new-build hotel to open in 2020.
One project is the transformation of 19-21 Collingwood Street, which is currently being used as office space, into a new £2m hotel set across four floors.
13 bedrooms will be created, plus a 1920’s-inspired restaurant, the Boardwalk Brasserie.
The top floor would become The Terrace at Metropolitan House Hotel, an indoor/outdoor space with a half retractable roof.
Commenting on the project, managing director, Phill Brumwell, says: “This is a fine old building in the heart of the Newcastle, which has tremendous potential to be a real focus for a very different leisure and entertainment venue than what is currently on offer. We have a vision to create high-quality hotel, restaurant and family friendly facilities, with a fully rounded experience for all generations.”
High Street Hospitality is also investing £4.5m in a 1.5-acre plot on the Durham Gate retail project at Thinford in County Durham, where it will construct a 42-bedroom hotel with restaurant and bar facilities.
Work is expected to start in August and be completed by 2020.
