Boutique hotel and pub brand, Star Original, has acquired its fifth site, The Grosvenor Arms in Shaftesbury, Dorset.
The 16-bedroom pub joins a growing collection of properties owned and run by the Somerset-based company, which specialises in ‘breathing new life into historic coaching inns’ having rebranded this summer from The Draco Pub Company.
Founded in 2011, Stay Original has transformed three other coaching inns into award-winning pubs: The Swan in Wedmore and The White Hart in Somerton, both in Somerset, and Timbrell’s Yard in Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire.
Its fourth property, The King’s Arms in Dorchester, with its literary links to Thomas Hardy, is currently undergoing extensive refurbishment and is scheduled to open in 2017.
The Grosvenor Arms is located in the heart of the Dorset hilltop market town of Shaftesbury and there has been an inn on the site since medieval times. Originally a timber framed building known as The Red Lion, it was bought by the Grosvenor family in 1820 and renamed The Grosvenor Arms.
Rob Greacen, managing director of Stay Original Co., said: “We are delighted to be the new owners of this historic and much loved local landmark. It’s an exciting addition to our expanding portfolio. We’re going to settle in, treat customers to a very special Christmas and then in the New Year we’ll start to make some improvements to the property. At Stay Original we pride ourselves on our food and first-rate service and customers in Shaftesbury can look forward to enjoying the very best of both of these immediately.”
