Douglas joined Hand Picked Hotels in 2006 and has transitioned several hotels into the group during that time, taking the portfolio up to 19 hotels with them, and the brand, winning several awards.
Douglas is every bit the face of the operation – always out in the business and on the go. Despite that, he still finds time to commit to charity fundraising and has raised more than £20k running over 30 marathons, competing in several iron man events and each time making the challenges more extreme, e.g. cycling from Edinburgh to London in five days and running the marathon on the sixth.
Passionate about industry charity Springboard, Douglas also leads a team within Hand Picked to cycle from London to Paris each year raising vital funds.
With CSR always high on his agenda, Douglas had all non-essential single use plastic items such as plastic straws, drinks stirrers, newspaper bags and almost all plastic drinking cups removed from the business in early 2018, replacing them with either recyclable or biodegradable greener alternatives as part of an ongoing commitment to reduce the businesses’ carbon footprint.
Employee wellbeing and satisfaction remains a core focus area for Douglas. To improve work/life balance for chefs, he introduced a 4-days on 3-days off working week for chefs and introduced ‘roaming chefs’ and ‘roaming spa therapists’ across the group to support during peak and holiday times within the departments that involve a high level of physical activity.
