Coal Exchange in Cardiff lines up for transformation under Signature Living ownership

Iconic building, the Coal Exchange in Cardiff, is being lined up as the next luxury hotel property to open under the Signature Living brand.

The property, which dates back to 1886 and was where the first £1m business deal was made in 1904, is being restored as The Exchange, a new luxury hotel by Signature Living.

Since launching in 2008, the group operates apartments, three hotels, including The Shankly Hotel in Liverpool, two restaurants and three bars, and The Exchange will be one of the Signature Living’s biggest projects to date.

The new hotel will be home to 200 bedrooms, a restaurant and aim to become a popular venue in the heart of the community in Cardiff. In the former bank section there will be a high-end restaurant.

The former Coal Exchange has fallen into disrepair and ruin since it was left unoccupied in 2013 after trading in its final reincarnation as a music venue.

Now Signature Living will ‘aim is to ensure the building’s stories and design can be enjoyed for future generations’.

Lawrence Kenwright, the hotel’s proprietor: “We wanted to make sure that it could be saved. We wanted to make sure that for generations to come that people saw that building as it was intended to be, albeit not for the same use. Because these buildings need a reason to survive. They need a reason to keep them alive for the next hundred years, for the next generations, so we feel it’s perfectly suited to being a hotel.”
