From today, businesses are able to claim for financial support for their furloughed employees from the government as the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) portal opens online.
The portal will be open from 8am on April 20 and is capable of processing 450,000 claims per hour. The system will be self-assessment and will operate around the clock, 24/7, with 3,500 support staff available to help companies make their claim.
Payments will be made by BACS within 4-6 days and HMRC has said all payments will be made by the last banking day of the month.
Companies will select a claim start date and this may be backdated to cover the period from 1 March 2020 providing you have evidence to support this date.
Last week, the government announced that it was extending the eligibility date for the CJRS to March 19, meaning thousands of seasonal hospitality staff who were hired ahead of Easter and summer periods were also covered by the scheme.
Under the scheme announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak last month, employers can claim a grant covering 80% of the wages for a furloughed employee, subject to a cap of £2,500 a month.
The scheme will run initially four months from March 1 to June 30, but may be extended.
