Crowdfunding campaign launched to push publication of Gerard Basset’s memoirs

A crowdfunding page has been set up to support the publication of the memoirs of Gerard Basset OBE, the esteemed sommelier and co-founder of Hotel du Vin who died last week.

Basset held an immeasurably successful career in the wine trade over the course of 30 years, described as one of the most influential, respected and beloved figures in the on-trade and a huge champion and supporter of the next generation of sommeliers.

He was also the only person ever, and still is, to simultaneously hold the Master of Wine, Master Sommelier and MBA Wine honours.

He passed away on 16 January after a 15-month battle with oesophagus cancer.

Now a campaign has been launched by crowdfunded publisher Unbound to cover the costs of publishing his book, titled Tasting Victory – The Life & Wines of the World’s Favourite Sommelier.

Basset started writing his memoirs in 2017 after he was forced to give up work commitments to focus on his medical treatments.

The book charts his business success, how he co-founded and sold Hotel du Vin and the training regime that saw him crowned World’s Best Sommelier in 2010.

Unbound is looking to raise £14,000 for publication costs, with any excess raised above this target going towards the book and to help Basset’s widow Nina and son Romané.
