EXCLUSIVE: Hotelier at The Curtain on the hunt for countryside site to take his concept outside the capital

Hotelier Michael Achenbaum, founder and operator of The Curtain in London, has exclusively told Boutique Hotelier of his hunt for a new site in the countryside to launch his first hotel outside of the capital.

Achenbaum, who opened the 120-bedroom hotel and members club in 2017, told BH that he ‘loves the countryside vibe’ here and is looking to create a new experience-led property in the regions.

“I am looking for properties to do a farmhouse-type concept, but more focused on the experience,” he explains. “So the moment you get there, you’re leaving your car, you’re committing to the concept of that property and that’s what I want to create.

“The element that it would tie back to this (The Curtain) but at the same time be focused on being exclusive; people make reservations for the spa and F&B but it wouldn’t just be generally open for people to just drive in.

Achenbaum said he has visited ‘beautiful properties’ such as Soho Farmhouse, Chewton Glen, The Fish and The Pig and admitted their locations were ‘amazing’.

“We are looking to take the best of what we’ve seen elsewhere and try to combine it for our own version of it.”

In August 2018, Achenbaum inked a deal with the Reuben brothers to buy the freehold of The Curtain under a long-term agreement, freeing up equity for Achenbaum to look into acquiring new sites.

Wheels are already firmly in motion for expansion, having viewed two sites in the countryside last week.

Commenting on the partnership with the Reuben Brothers, Achenbaum said they had been ‘super supportive and very hands off’, helping to facilitate introductions and make suggestions

“We were looking to do a sale leaseback and they were the right party at the right time,” he adds.

Achenbaum is the founder of the Gansevoort Hotel Group, which he launched in 2004 with the opening of Gansevoort Meatpacking.

He has since gone on to open a second hotel in New York, as well as Turks + Caicos.

The Curtain comprises Red Rooster, an ‘indoor garden’ bar, rooftop pool the Lido, Billy’s Bar, The Green Room, late-night dance spot, the LP and 24-hour gym and underground spa and offers membership from £1,000 per annum.
