We catch up with Digvijay Singh, area director and general manager at Taj Hotels to discover his first job and the best piece of advice he has ever received.
Highlight of your career so far?
Operating and managing the landmark hotels of IHCL in London
Last hotel you stayed at?
The Peninsula, Hong Kong.
Which other company (inside or outside the industry) do you most admire and why?
Tesla – for its imagination and innovation.
What’s the first thing you do when you get to work in the morning?
I go through the departmental revenues along with voice of customer in both the hotels.
Your dream job?
Managing high end luxury lodges in the deep jungles of Africa.
If you could choose three guests, dead or alive, to dinner, who would you choose?
His Holiness Dalai Lama, President Barack Obama, Mr Ratan Tata
Biggest service bugbear?
When all guests in a full capacity hotel choose to have breakfast at the same time in one restaurant.
Your first job?
I started my career as a trainee chef in Taj Coromandel Chennai and was privileged to work with some top quality chefs of the TAJ group.
If you weren’t a hotelier what would you be doing?
I would be playing professional polo.
Something you wish you knew before joining the industry:
That it requires a huge amount of patience, calm and composure.
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
Back in the culinary world, cooking in my high quality restaurant on a farmland.
