Head honcho at Harbour Hotels calls for industry to back gruelling charity challenge

Simon Maguire, head of operations at Harbour Hotels, is calling for the hospitality industry to get behind him as he attempts to cycle 317 miles in four days.

Simon’s ‘Ride for Rooms’ challenge, which will see him bike from the St Ives Harbour Hotel in Cornwall to the Brighton Harbour Hotel, starts today, and is aiming to raise awareness of the hospitality charity Room to Reward.

The charity initiative encourages hotels donate their unsold rooms, via the scheme, to provide nominated charity workers and volunteers a complimentary break, giving charities the means to motivate, thank and contribute to the well-being of these invaluable individuals.

Maguire has set himself the task getting a total of 317 room nights pledged by hotels who are not already partners to the scheme, equating to one room for every mile endured.

Some of the hotels already on board include the Grand Hotel Brighton, One Devonshire Gardens Hotel Glasgow, Foxhills, The Atlantic Hotel in Jersey, Georgian House Hotel London and Soar Mill Cove Hotel near Salcombe.

Simon Maguire said: “Room to Reward is an amazing charity which gives hoteliers like me an opportunity to give back. It rewards those who truly deserved to be pampered and looked after with an unforgettable experience that they will cherish for years to come.”

Room to Reward launched in July 2015, as the first of its kind in the hospitality industry, and now has over 100 hotels supporting the scheme. It works with many registered charities including ‘Mencap’, ‘Macmillan Caring’, ‘National Autistic Society’, ‘Maggie’s Cancer Centres’, ‘Hearing Dogs for Deaf People’ and ‘Wales Air Ambulance’.

Adam Terpening, charity director of Room to Reward commented: “We are hugely grateful to Simon for both his support and enthusiasm for the Room to Reward initiative. The power of a thank you is untold. Our scheme is a simple one but the impact it has on the charity sector is significant, we feel honoured to be able to recognise those who make such a difference to the lives of others.”
