Hotel in South Shields to undergo refurbishment after £1m buyout from High Street Group

A hotel in South Shields is to undergo a refurbishment after being acquired by new ownership.

The Sea Hotel has been taken over by High Street Hospitality, part of the Newcastle-based High Street Group of Companies in a £1m deal, with a further £750k now to be invested into updates across the property.

The project will see a full refurbishment of the bedrooms, reception areas, restaurant and functions areas, and a rebrand to become part of High Street Hospitality’s Hotel 52 chain.

Once complete, The Sea Hotel will be home to a Latin American bar and kitchen, a sports bar, fish and chip takeaway and a coffee outlet.

Managing director Phill Brumwell said: “We are delighted to add such a well known, iconic hotel to our fast growing chain. The Sea Hotel is prominently situated on the sea front, just 100 yards from the beach and right opposite South Marine Park.

“We will improve the facilities to a very high standard, creating a boutique hotel with an array of food and beverage outlets. It will be a vibrant and attractive seaside leisure facility which I believe will bring many more guests and customers to what is already and established and popular venue.”

During 2017, High Street Hospitality revealed plans to deliver 15-20 hotels under the Hotel 52 brand over the next five years. The first hotel to join was Hotel 52, Whitley Bay, a 32-bedroom hotel with adjoining South-American restaurant Loca. In late 2017, the company opened the 23-bedroom Hotel 52 in Stanley, County Durham.
