Hoteliers should be embracing the opportunity to capitalise on afternoon tea as online searches for deliveries of scones and jam in the UK surge.

New data from Google Trends found that afternoon tea treats topped the list of most increased searches for ‘delivery’ queries in the UK as people look for pick-me-ups during lockdown.

With so many momentous events cancelled, from weddings, to milestone birthdays and baby showers, hoteliers can use the rise in demand to cash in on deliveries of cream teas, sandwiches and cakes, which was also a popular search term highlighted by the analysis.

Speaking to the BBC, Victoria Austin, a former Young Chef of the Year and owner of Homemade by Victoria, said afternoon teas were now her bestsellers as she caters for the local community.

A spokesperson for Rodda’s, the Cornish clotted cream business, also suggested to the BBC that the popularity may be to do with a wish for “home comforts”.
