Carrie Wicks’ passion for people meant she spent 19 years at pioneering boutique brand Firmdale Hotels, leaving her role as operations director in November 2016. The move surprised many in the industry, as she was widely seen as one of the main captains of the ship at Firmdale, having been responsible for the growth of the dynamic brand operationally. The company lucky enough to tempt her away from Firmdale and out of London was the Leeu Collection. Owned by Indian entrepreneur, Analjit Singh, the South African collection debuted in the UK with the acquisition of the 30-bedroom Linthwaite House in the Lake District in January 2016. Wicks was appointed as CEO in November of the same year, and said she was ‘delighted’ to be joining, and was ‘anticipating an incredible journey as we grow and develop the portfolio’. Now Wicks has been tasked with ramping up the group’s expansion plans and adding to the collection, which currently consists of three five-star properties in South Africa. “I think hoteliers do need to be more aware of how quickly the sector is changing,” she said, “I feel that sometimes we fight each other a bit and we should be helping each other. We should all be transparent about things; what have we got to hide?”
