Now in his 75th year, Peter de Savary is concentrating his efforts on his collection of thoughtful and unique boutique properties in the UK – a collection including the ‘inn on the beach’ Cary Arms & Spa, Devon; the elegant and gastronomic The Eastbury in Sherborne, Dorset; Regency townhouse B&B, The Bradley, Cheltenham and the quirky, yet traditional 16th century llama trekking inn, the Merry Harriers in Surrey.
Peter de Savary, or “PdeS” as he is known, takes a hands-on approach and personal pride in all aspects of operating his hotels and inns, visiting each property weekly and spending time nurturing his team (of mostly locals) and teaching them the essence of exceptional service and creating a home-from-home atmosphere. Many guests today look for the personal touch and still want to be treated as an individual, and he encourages staff to take an engaging approach.
“Smile, we’re in showbusiness” has become PdeS’s catchphrase. It encapsulates his philosophy that everyone in hospitality is an actor on a stage is there to look after the guest, with a smile and a caring attitude.
As well as service being key, an ever evolving and forward-thinking product is fundamental to his success. Following recent success with beach huts and boutique spas, in the past year he’s opened shepherds huts and garden suites and 2019 will see some innovative potting shed garden suites and a hobbit house spa open at The Eastbury.
