Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park brings in ‘godfather’ of British pop art to create iconic collage to disguise £185m project

The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park has brought in the ‘godfather’ of British pop art to create an iconic collage to cover up its £185m restoration process.

The Knightsbridge hotel has called upon Sir Peter Blake to create a 25m by 70.7m image inspired by the Beatles cover he designed 50 years ago.

Named Our Fans, the collage features 100 famous faces who are said to be fans of the hotel group, including Dame Helen Mirren and Sir Paul McCartney, and was commissioned especially by the hotel’s owners.

London Advertising commissioned the  collage as the latest installment of an 18-year brand campaign which is the brainchild of agency  founders Michael Moszynski and Alan Jarvie.

The showstopping image towers above its neighbouring buildings and is the biggest collage Blake has ever completed. It is thought the picture will remain in place until May when the first phase of renovation is complete.

The work took about 30 hours to produce, on a computer at the Coriander and Curwen Studios.

The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park started the transformation project in December 2016, which will see its bedrooms, restaurant and public areas refurbished.

The work is scheduled for completion in Spring 2018.
