Bovey Castle in Devon, part of the Eden Hotel Collection, appointed new general manager Martin Kelly late last year to replace Francisco Macedo.
Kelly joined the five-red-star hotel and country estate situated in Dartmoor having previously held general manager positions at the Grand Jersey Hotel & Spa and L’Horizon Beach Hotel & Spa in Jersey, alongside other hotel management roles at properties in Brighton, Birmingham and Glasgow.
Within the first few months he was thrust into the Christmas rush at 60-bedroom Bovey Castle, hosting over 200 guests per night for nearly two weeks; a good opportunity to see the operation in full swing.
He describes his management style as firm, fair and consistent and says that a successful leadership takes time – ‘trust is a two-way street’ – as he looks to strengthen relationships within the team and make an impact.
Now he works alongside director Greg Fehler and managing director Mark Chambers to take business at Bovey to the next level, overseeing the 60 bedrooms, 22 lodges, an 18-hole championship golf course, tennis courts and an Elan Spa. The hotel’s three-AA-rosette Great Western restaurant is overseen by head chef Mark Budd, who also manages the hotel’s casual dining option, Smith’s Brasserie.
The Eden hotel Collection acquired Bovey Castle from property investment company Delancey in 2014 and embarked on an extensive £10m investment, updating facilities, bedrooms and the spa.
