Work on a £3m new hotel and restaurant in Gainsborough is finally going to be begin, almost three years after planning a application was submitted and approved by councillors.

The former Sun Inn on the main crossroads of the town, is currently being transformed into a boutique hotel with Italian restaurant, after being acquired by Dransfield Properties in 2014.

Dransfield Properties is now working with the architects Dixon Dawson to deliver an Edwardian-style hotel which is inkeeping with the neighbouring buildings and housing a total of 67 bedrooms.

In August 2014, West Lindsey District Council’s Planning Committee unanimously approved the application for the £3 million development and the decision was then upheld by DCLG later in the year.

It was revealed in January 2015 that Premier Inn was to be the operators of the new hotel, which is on the corner of Market Street and North Street. However a year later it emerged that Premier Inn was no longer going ahead with the hotel project.

In May 2016, Dransfield Properties was said to be working with another hotel operator to devise a revised plan.

The Sun Inn closed several years ago and always had an Italian restaurant at the rear which was a popular eatery in its heyday.
