New owners of north Devon boutique to invest £500k in four-star status bid

The owners of a hotel in Ilfracombe, north Devon, are investing £500k into their property in a bid to scoop four-star status from the AA.

Eliot Seabourn-Wren and Michael Rebeiro bought The Carlton Hotel in August 2015 and have spent £300k since on updating the hotel’s bar, brasserie, gym and library, plus the creation of a new event space.

The owners, who moved from East London to take over the property, have transformed 10 of the hotel’s 45 bedrooms and will now focus on rolling out the refurbishment across the rest of the bedrooms to a four-star standard.

The couple has also introduced a round-the-clock food and drink and leisure facilities and employs six staff all year round.

Rebeiro has almost 35 years experience in hospitality managing hotels, before he took the plunge to own one of his own.

Wren said: “When we were doing our research we noticed the town council said in its strategic plan it wanted a four star property, so we factored that in.”
