Pontus Carminger, managing director, Historic Sussex Hotels

Hotelier Pontus Carminger runs Historic Sussex Hotels which includes Bailiffscourt, Ockendon and The Spread Eagle. The family business dates back almost 60 years with the acquisition of the Spread Eagle in Sussex, followed by the addition of Ockenden Manor in 1987, before Bailiffscourt came along in 1993.

Today the portfolio is run by Pontus and his wife Miranda alongside her father Sandy Goodman.

The hotels pride themselves on attention to detail, with Pontus going to great lengths to decorate them together with Miranda, making sure each room is individually tailored to its surroundings. The hotels are equipped with 21 open fireplaces, 24 four poster beds and boast over 600 years of hospitality between them.

The country retreats have also become popular with spa goers; impressive facilities and spa treatments have made Historic Sussex Hotels a popular ‘spa weekend’ destination. New age beauty regimes have also been added, such as an Isopod at Ockenden, to keep the properties at the forefront of the industry.

Once quoted as saying, ‘work with people you like and whose company you enjoy,’ Carminger champions the ethos that top customer service goes hand in hand with a happy working environment.

Perhaps one of the biggest steps in his career with HSH was launching the iconic spa at Ockenden Manor in 2012. The facility has easily become one of the front runners for spa and wellness innovations in the sector.
