Power List 2016: Industry Titans sponsored by Frima – Mike Warren, managing director, Harbour Hotels Group

Mike Warren

Boasting an extensive record in the hospitality sector, Mike Warren joined the Harbour Hotels Group as managing director in January 2014. In his capacity as MD, Mike has successfully taken the helm, driving the business forward and establishing the group as a real market leader.

Mike’s most prominent role on his CV is the two decades he spent with Hotel du Vin, working closely with Robin Hutson and Gerard Bassett as the group’s popularity shot through the roof. After opening the largest Hotel du Vin in Birmingham in 2001 as general manager, he then went on to become COO of the group in 2005.

Warren explains: “I saw the Hotel du Vin business grow from one property with 19 bedrooms in Winchester turning over £2m, to 15 hotels of varying sizes turning over £52m; it was such a fantastic experience to be part of this growth and I learnt so much.”

Armed with this mentality, Mike has implemented a number of upgrades to the Harbour Hotels’ brand in a bid to enhance the consistency of the guest experience. Over the past 18 months, properties have been acquired in prime, vibrant city locations, to include Bristol, Brighton and Chichester – steering the group in a new direction that now spans coastal, country and city sites.

The group’s award-winning restaurant concepts, the Upper Deck Bar & Restaurant and The Jetty have also been introduced across the portfolio.

In addition, the Harbour Spa brand has been established across its hotels, as Mike works on introducing an in-house product range, to coincide with the introduction of the group’s new urban spas.

With a focus on establishing an internal talent pipeline, career progression and, in turn, retention, Warren has not only implemented new training schemes and an imminent new Harbour Hotels Academy, but an annual Harbour Heroes Awards ceremony, rewarding the group’s shining stars.

With a series of accolades in 2015, to include Large Hotel of the Year in the Dorset and Devon Tourism Awards, Sunday Telegraph’s Best UK Spas and a Michelin Bib Gourmand to name a few, under Mike’s guidance the group goes from strength to strength and he has certainly succeeded in putting the brand on the map.

2016 will be another exciting year for Harbour Hotels, with new openings in Brighton, Bristol, Chichester and Guildford, with Southampton and Salcombe to follow in 2017; as Mike works with the teams to create a stand-out product and UK brand.
