Recently-refurbished The Academy Hotel causes a stir with new bar staff hire

The Academy Hotel, YTL Hotels’ recently refurbished property in Gower Street London, has appointed an ‘alchemist’ to focus on driving business to the hotel’s new Alchemy Bar, which opened this summer.

Ilias Chondros joins the hotel from Hard Rock Café in Athens, where he was stationed for three years and will now take the helm as head bartender and alchemist at the new bar In Bloomsbury.

The 50-bedroom boutique made up of five Georgian houses, reopened in May after a five-month refurbishment headed up by Champalimaud Design.

The hotel then unveiled its new library, inspired by stars of literature, and the refreshed Alchemy Bar in June.

Of the appointment, and move to London, Chondros said: “Having been building up my skills and craftmanship for the past decade, I feel ready to take the helm not just as Head Bartender, but as ‘The Alchemist.’ It is the perfect role to explore my experimental side and utilise my skills in throwing together flavours and textures in a new and unique way. London has an incredible cocktail and mixology scene, and I’m so excited to have made the move from Athens with such a renowned group as YTL Hotels.”
